Mould making
Many of our ceramic shades are made using the technique of slip-casting and the first step in this process is making plaster moulds.
This involves first making a solid model of the shape that you want to end up with, but bigger to allow for shrinkage later in the process. From this model a master mould is developed and from that the moulds for the slip-casting process can finally be made. Depending on the shape, the moulds can either be one-piece and allow the ‘leather’ hard clay to drop out on its own, or they can be made of several pieces so more complex shapes can be created.
Starting with a great mould really help to create a quality finished piece, our mould-maker is a real craftsman, based in the ‘home’ of UK pottery, Stoke-on-Trent.
