Bessborough Project

2 Bessborough Street is Grade II listed  office building in Pimlico, London, recently refurbished by Stiff+Trevillion Architects. As a part of the refurbishment project, our friends Mentsen were commissioned by Crown Estate to design and make a feature lighting installation for its double height lift hall, along with furniture for the lounge at the entrance, which had been redesigned into a lighter, more open space.

Having recently designed our Mela, a glass globe light with a dimple at the centre, Mentsen decided to develop this simple shape further into something that would work perfectly for the oak panelled hall. Having light shining though glass helps soften the masculine entrance and introduces fluidity into the space. Utilising the etched clear glass instead of opal glass creates a semi transparent light diffusion, giving a more complex expression of light and physical presence. The end result is a stunning 3.8 metre length chandelier with bronze fittings to complement the glass.

We then worked with Mentsen to develop this idea into the Melina, as a series of cluster pendants as well as a wall mounted version.

For larger spaces, we can adapt our Melina into bespoke formats to create large feature lighting installations ideal for vertical spaces such as tall hallways, foyers and stairwells. We can help plan, design and visualise a unique configuration for your space. Get in touch by emailing info@handandeyestudio.co.uk for more information.
