Chroma

Information

We’ve taken our most popular shaped shade, slip-cast in earthenware, and added a semi-matt glaze to give it a lovely satin texture. This large and striking pendant light is available in three colours, all of which start with a white body earthenware clay to enable a purer glaze colour.

For our Chroma range, we chose ‘quiet’ colours creating a sense of calm and rooted in inspiration from nature: sand dunes, straw and raven’s feathers. Working with a glaze specialist we developed these into the Chroma Oyster, Mustard and Liquorice as a satin glaze, which is soft but retains some reflection. The Liquorice was particularly difficult to get right but in the end was created by altering the cobalt content of the glaze and making it a bit more matt. These three colours blend nicely together so they can be used in combination or in mono-chrome.

The lip of the shade has been left unglazed, so the natural earthenware white comes though, revealing the materiality of the shade and adding some contrast to the colour.

Chroma Colours

When creating our Chroma light, we wanted to have colours that were modern and bold but would work well in a multitude of settings. To soften the lights we developed the glazes as a satin finish retaining some reflection whilst appearing softer than a typical glaze.

The Mustard was the first we got right- not too yellow and not too brown- a shade that has a hint of vintage about it. The Liquorice is a black with a hint of green and blue, created by altering the cobalt content of the glaze, which has a great architectural presence without being too stark. Last to be decided was the Oyster, a nude/pink that can stand out more or less depending on the rest of the decor of a space.

Just the lip of the shade is left unglazed, so you get a hint of the natural earthenware white coming though for contrast.

The process involves first glazing the interior of the once-fired shades, sponging off any excess from the dipping and rolling process. the exterior is then sprayed with its glaze and the shades are fired again. If there are any issues then the shades are sprayed again to perfect the glaze before firing for a final time.
